How to read vehicle dimensions
Manufacturers publish dozens of measurements, but a small group explains most of a vehicle's real-world footprint. Compare them together: two cars with similar exterior length may package passengers and cargo very differently.
Overall length
Measured from the furthest point of the front bumper to the furthest point at the rear. Length is essential for garage fit, street parking, and turning in tight areas.
Overall width
Usually measured across the widest part of the body without mirrors, unless stated otherwise. Check the source carefully when planning for a narrow garage door or parking bay.
Overall height
Measured from the ground to the highest fixed point. Roof rails may be included. Height matters for garages, car parks, roof boxes, and ease of entry.
Wheelbase
The distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels. A longer wheelbase can support more cabin room and a settled ride; a shorter one often improves maneuverability.
Ground clearance
The distance between the ground and the lowest part of the vehicle. More clearance can help on rough roads, though it may raise the step-in height and center of gravity.
Cargo volume
The usable storage space behind a seating row. Measurement standards differ, so compare figures produced under the same method whenever possible.
Curb weight
The vehicle's weight with required fluids and standard equipment but generally without passengers or cargo. Heavier is not automatically safer or better; weight affects efficiency and handling.
Measure your own space before choosing
Measure the narrowest point of your garage door, the usable length to walls or storage, and the height beneath any overhead mechanism. Leave space to walk around the vehicle and open doors or the tailgate. For city parking, compare width with mirrors and check turning-circle data from the manufacturer.
